IRS Refund Checks & Payments

The IRS will soon no longer issue paper checks for tax refunds and will not accept paper checks for other federal payments. Refunds can be issued, and payments can be accepted, by providing your tax preparer with a bank routing and account number.

Note that the Social Security Administration is following suit and will soon no longer be issuing paper checks. An online account will need to be created to enroll in direct deposit or Direct Express Card. See additional information below.

The Social Security Administration has transitioned to a new sign-in:

Social Security Account:

Login.gov and ID.me are now the only sign-in options to use Social Security’s online services. The option to sign in using a Social Security username and password has been removed.

Direct Deposit: Beneficiaries should enroll in direct deposit with their financial institution. Payments can be deposited directly into your checking or savings account.

Direct Express® Card: For people without a bank account, the Direct Express card is a prepaid debit card designed specifically for federal benefit payments.

You can update your payment information anytime through your personal my Social Security account online.

For more details and to learn how to enroll in direct deposit or obtain a Direct Express card, please visit www.ssa.gov/deposit/

*It is important to note that ID.me can be used for both IRS and SSA services, but Login.gov cannot be used for all IRS services.
